Taking an existing building designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, David Chipperfield has slid a new 8 storey glass facade over the front wall and created a new world of terrazzo inside. The walls and floors have been entirely covered in grey Palladiana terrazzo with additional marble plinths, marble columns and timber-framed display cases added.

Chipperfield is a master of restrained elegance, and understands the beauty of both symmetrical and asymmetrical composition. The use of repetition in the use of material, then in the use of lighting and display hangers adds a special strength to the design.
